The russians were years ahead of us in the space race. They were already developing a craft to take a single man to the moon. If you look at their design, it was much more credible, but they still couldn’t get the mass of the craft small enough to fly a single man and equipment to the moon. This was to be done with two launches, one for the manned module that would go to the moon and return. The other for the additional fuel and equipment that would be necessary for the trip. They weren’t taking a lunar rover, or enough food, water, and air to sustain 3 astronauts. Yet they had to face the reality that using their current technology the trip was impossible. They spent 14 years trying to achive this goal before canceling the program. Their aerospace technology at the start of the program was just ahead of the U.S. technology, and after 14 years it was far beyond the point where the U.S. finished its first manned lunar craft and put it on the moon. Yet the Russians after 14 years realized that it could not be physically done. That is something that with todays current nanotechnology and microcomputers we are able to consider doing, but even with that, the projection for a manned lunar round trip isn’t for 15 more years.
The reason that the remainder of the U.S. missions were scrubbed and the program cancelled was because it was taking a huge ammount of resources to pull off a fake lunar walk and technology was getting to the point where people were starting to question the validity of the photos and video.
