sorry mikeometer, I wasn’t very clear about that. As the earth passes directly between the moon and the sun we see a full moon, as the moon passes between the sun and the earth we see a new moon (no moon) since the dark side is facing us. I didn’t mean to imply that the phases of the moon were caused by the shadow of the earth on the lunar surface, but it does sound like that’s what I’m saying though.
Instead of saying, ” as the earth passes between the moon and the sun, it creates the lunar cycle..”
I should have said, “as the earth passes from between the moon and the sun to behind the moon, our view of the illuminated area of the moon changes causing the lunar cycle.
