October Surprise conspiracy was an alleged plot to influence the 1980 US presidential election between Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan.

52 Americans were being held hostage in Iran since November 4, 1979.

Reagan won the election and on his inauguration (20 mins after his inaugural address) the Islamic Republic of Iran released the hostages.

Had Reagan’s presidential campaign conspired with Iran to delay the release until after the election in order to stop President Carter from pulling off an “October surprise”.

The conspirators believe President Reagan rewarded Iran by supplying Iran with weapons via Israel and unblocking Iranian government monetary assets in US banks.

Both houses of the US Congress held inquiries and concluded the allegations lack supporting documentation. Several individuals—most notably former Iranian President Abolhassan Bani-Sadr, former Naval intelligence officer and National Security Council member, Gary Sick; and former Reagan/Bush campaign and White House staffer, Barbara Honegger—have stood by the allegation.
